About Wayland

Serving Richmond families since 1999 β€” built on sport, community, and the belief that every child has a promising future.

Our Goal, Mission
& Philosophy

Our goal is to instill a desire for children to stay active and healthy β€” for a lifetime.

Who We Are

Wayland Sports is located at 12080 Horseshoe Way, Richmond, BC. We provide sport instruction to over 500 children per year β€” from Richmond and surrounding communities β€” offering programs in swimming, gymnastics, trampoline, strength training, birthday parties, and Swim & Gym camps.

Our founder, Ying Wang, chose the English name Wayland because when you say it, it sounds like the Chinese word ζœͺζ₯ (WΓ¨ilΓ‘i), which means future. At Wayland Sports, we believe that a strong foundation in sport provides a strong foundation in life β€” creating a promising future for every child.

Our Mission

Wayland Sports Ltd. is devoted to the development of movement education, specializing in recreation, sport, and entertainment for children ages 3 and up (and adults too!). Our goal is to create a lifelong love for fitness through fun, challenging sports and movement activities.

Participants enjoy gymnastics, tumbling, trampoline, swimming, school holiday & summer camps, birthday parties, field trips, special events, and more.

Our Philosophy

πŸŽ‰

Fun

Every session should be something kids look forward to β€” joyful, energetic, and memorable.

πŸ’ͺ

Fitness

Building strength, endurance, and healthy habits that last a lifetime β€” starting young.

πŸ…

Fundamentals

Teaching the core skills of movement and sport that underpin everything else a child will do.

We believe that every participant is special. We value each individual’s needs, aspirations, and abilities. We strive to provide a learning environment that is safe, nurturing, and fosters self-esteem β€” creating success for every participant. With consistent guidance and respect, every child will flourish and grow.

The Story of
Wayland

The name Wayland carries deep meaning β€” both mythological and deeply personal. In ancient Teutonic myth, Wayland was a legendary craftsman, revered across Scandinavia, Germany, and Anglo-Saxon England. He was said to be the son of the god-giant Wade, a great sailor whose vessel β€” crafted from two halves of a tree β€” could even sail underwater.

But at Wayland Sports, the name means something more immediate. ζœͺζ₯ (WΓ¨ilΓ‘i) β€” the Chinese word that sounds like “way land” when spoken aloud β€” means future. That is what Ying Wang had in mind when she chose the name: a sports community dedicated entirely to the futures of the children in our care.

1999

Where It All Began

Gen Mei Liu and Ying Wang begin coaching children at community pools in Richmond, BC β€” bringing national-level expertise in swimming and sailing to the next generation of young athletes.

2003

Swim Program Officially Launches

Wayland Sports registers as an official swim program and opens its own private 18-metre pool β€” growing rapidly thanks to Gen and Ying’s reputation and their unique bilingual approach to sport instruction.

Early 2010s

First Indoor 6-Lane 25m Pool

A major milestone: Wayland opens its first dedicated indoor facility featuring a 6-lane 25-metre pool β€” one of Richmond’s premier competitive swim venues β€” alongside a full gymnastics program under the same roof.

2012 – 2019

Thousands of Children & 8 Locations

Growth accelerates. Wayland expands to 8 gymnastics locations across BC, reaching thousands of children per year and cementing its place as one of the province’s most trusted children’s sport organizations.

2020

Adapting Through COVID-19

The pandemic forced a painful reset. Satellite locations closed; operations consolidated to the Richmond flagship. It was a setback β€” but it also focused the team on what matters most.

Today

Rebuilt & Moving Forward

Back at full strength from 12080 Horseshoe Way, Wayland Sports today serves over 500 children from Richmond and beyond with world-class coaching in swimming, gymnastics, lifesaving, camps, and more.

“Wayland, ζœͺζ₯, is founded on the belief that sport gives children a strong foundation for life β€” and a promising future.”

Physical
Literacy

Physical literacy is the foundation of everything we do at Wayland Sports. It goes beyond learning to swim or do a cartwheel β€” it’s about giving every child the confidence, competence, and motivation to be physically active for life.

A physically literate child moves with skill and confidence across a wide range of physical activities, understands how their body works, and develops a genuine enjoyment of movement that stays with them into adulthood.

At Wayland, physical literacy isn’t a program β€” it’s our philosophy. Every class, every session, and every coach interaction is designed to build not just skill, but a lasting relationship between your child and physical activity.

🧠

Confidence

Children who feel capable in their bodies carry that self-assurance into every area of life. We build confidence through achievable challenges, positive reinforcement, and celebrating every milestone.

πŸƒ

Competence

From basic movement skills to advanced athletic technique, we teach children to move well β€” with proper form, coordination, and body awareness that transfers across every sport they’ll ever try.

❀️

Motivation

The best workout is one kids actually want to do. We keep sessions fun, energetic, and rewarding β€” so children develop an intrinsic love of movement, not just a habit they’ll drop when the class ends.

🀝

Inclusion

Every child is different. Our coaches adapt to individual needs, abilities, and learning styles β€” ensuring that every participant, regardless of ability, feels seen, supported, and successful.

Why It Matters

Research shows that children who develop physical literacy early are significantly more likely to remain active throughout their lives. They have better physical health, stronger mental wellbeing, improved academic performance, and greater social skills.

At Wayland Sports, we know that the hours your child spends with us aren’t just about learning to swim faster or stick a landing β€” they’re about building a foundation that will serve them for the rest of their lives.
